You will not be able to use rclone to redownload original images. You could use ‘google takeout’ to recover the original photos as a last resort

The directories under media show different ways of categorizing the media. Each file will appear multiple times. So if you want to make a backup of your google photos you might choose to backup remote:media/by-month. ( NB remote:media/by-day is rather slow at the moment so avoid for syncing.)

Year limits the photos to be downloaded to those which are uploaded after the given year.

Normally rclone does not read the size of media items since this takes another transaction. This isn’t necessary for syncing. However rclone mount needs to know the size of files in advance of reading them, so setting this flag when using rclone mount is recommended if you want to read the media.

Google has just announced a new application called “Gallery Go”. It is from the Google Photos team, and is supposed to offer an alternative “liter” app for people who either just want a Gallery App with simple editing features, OR don’t want or cannot upload their photos to the cloud.

Targeted at people who want online alternatives, or for people in slow internet areas – for example, if you don’t want to upload your photos to Google Photos, or if the data costs are high, etc.

The shared-album directory shows albums shared with you or by you. This is similar to the Sharing tab in the Google Photos web interface.

The questions are : is there any way to define an other path to save the pictures and that is accessible by google photo or is there any way to configure android 11 to grant google photo access to the save path of memento?

This post isn’t meant to be a comprehensive review or instructions on how to use Google photos. But I wanted to share a few thoughts about it, particularly those of you who are archiving and using photos for family history.

On my previous phone I was able to configure google photo to save the pictures stored in the data folder (storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com. luckydroid. ) into google photo.

This means that you can use the album path pretty much like a normal filesystem and it is a good target for repeated syncing.

Gallery Go automatically manage your photos by the people and things you take photos of, so you can easily find your favorite selfie, remember where you had the best puff, and keep track of important documents. You don’t have to manually label your pictures and all these features run on your phone, without using your data. You can create folders to manage your photos, and Gallery Go works with SD cards, so you can easily copy them from your smartphone . It’s not immediately clear if all of the features work with photos stored on SD cards, or if they have to be transferred to the internal storage first. It would be a benefit if it did work with photos stored on MicroSD cards though since you can buy high memory capacity cards far cheaper than high memory capacity phones.

When you begin using Google Photos, it gives you two storage options. One, called “Original,” stores your images at their original resolution and quality (which would quickly use up your free 15 GB limit shared between Google Drive, Photos, and Gmail, unless you have purchased more storage). The other, called “High Quality,” actually saves your images at a lower quality setting (more compression)–but you can upload as many as you want.

Note that media in albums is always visible and synced, no matter their archive status.

Gallery Go will organize your pictures into selfies, food, animals, etc. All this will be done offline apparently. This shows how effective Google AI is getting with pictures. That all that can be done offline on a 10MB app without having to send data back and forth between the Google Cloud and your phone probably points to the already teased “Next Gen Assistant” being pretty mind-blowing.

On my new phone (oneplus nord 2 with android 11) it seems that google photo does’nt have access to that folder anymore. In the settings of memento I only see 2 paths for the file, the one above and /data/user/0/com. luckydroid. When I select the second one, I can’t even find the picture back on my phone with x-plore.

Note that rclone runs a webserver on your local machine to collect the token as returned from Google if using web browser to automatically authenticate. This only runs from the moment it opens your browser to the moment you get back the verification code. This is on http://127.0.0.1:53682/ and this may require you to unblock it temporarily if you are running a host firewall, or use manual mode.
